Robby and Betty Jernigan (M.A.s 1981) are AG U.S. missionaries assigned to recruit, train and place volunteer emergency services chaplains across the country.

On October 26–27, 2011, AGTS will partner with the Assemblies of God Chaplaincy Ministries Office and AGTS alumnus Robby Jernigan (M.A. 1981) to offer a two-day, ministry development seminar at AGTS for those working as or interested in becoming volunteer chaplains in the fields of fire, law enforcement, EMS or emergency dispatch.

"A well-trained, active emergency services chaplain can become a bridge between a caring church(es) and hurting people within its community," said Jernigan. "Emergency Services Chaplains minister to both responders and citizens in crisis."

The Emergency Services Chaplain Training Seminar will include instruction, group discussions, role-playing, etc. and will culminate with a field training exercise involving several emergency services agencies. The training scenario is intended to allow the participant to experience the sights, sounds, smells and emotions of a crisis event and to learn how to minister to those affected.

Topics will include:

  • The History and Basics of Emergency Services Chaplaincy
  • Ministry on an Emergency Scene
  • Emergency Services Funerals
  • Developing Department Guidelines for the Chaplain's Ministry
  • Ministry to a Suicidal Subject
  • Ethics and Self Care
  • Critical Incident Stress Management
  • Psychological First Aid
  • Death Notifications

The seminar will begin on Wednesday, October 26, at 8:50 a.m. and will dismiss at 5 p.m., resuming at around 9 a.m. the next morning until 5 p.m. that night.

Email Robby Jernigan (robbyj@ipa.net) if you are interested. The seminar is free but donations are accepted. Certificates of completion will be issued.
