AGTS Welcomes New Academic Dean

Dr. Joseph L. Castleberry has been appointed by the AGTS board of directors to be the new academic dean beginning January 2003. He has been a missionary under appointment with Assemblies of God World Missions since 1988 serving in El Salvador and Ecuador. Throughout his missionary career Castleberry has divided his efforts between church planting and theological education. He recently established the first Evangelical church among the previously unreached descendants of African slaves of the Chota Valley, Ecuador.

Castleberry has served as academic vice president for the AG Biblical Seminary in Quito, Ecuador (1997-2001). He was also associate dean for curriculum Development at Global University, School of Graduate Studies (1993-97) and associate dean for Latin America, Global University of the AG, School of Bible and Theology (1993-1994). While serving in El Salvador he taught on the Biblical Studies and Theology Faculty at Assemblies of God Christian University and at Bethel Bible Institute.

He received a B.A. from Evangel University, an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and an Ed.D. in International Educational Development from Columbia University in New York City. Castleberry is married to Kathleen. They have three daughters, Jessica, Jodi, and Sophie.

Comprehensive Exam Date/Papers Deadline

The deadline for analytical reflection papers for fall graduates is Monday, November 4. The comprehensive examination date is also November 4. Please contact faculty secretary, Kimberly Penrod (268-1070 or faculty@agts.edu) if you have any questions.

Bible and Theology Lectureship

Mark your calendars now for the next Bible and Theology Department Lectureship on Thursday, January 30, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel. Watch for further details.

Syllabi Review

Students are welcome to review current and previous course syllabi in the library at any time or check online. These can be especially helpful when trying to decide on courses prior to preregistration.

Faculty News

Roger Cotton was a guest speaker at the Chi Alpha fall retreat for Southwest Missouri State University from October 4-6.

Jim Harris was awarded the designation of Approved Supervisor in October by the American Association for Marital and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the primary professional certification body in the United States for marriage and family. This credential is needed in order to supervise marriage and family therapy students and those seeking licensure. Congratulations Brother Harris!

Dr. Harris also spoke on the topic of “Teen Pressure” at the Simply Pure: A Teen-Only Weekend rally at Webster Heights AG in Springfield on October 4.

Spring Registration

On November 7, registration packets will be placed in the student mailboxes. Sign up for an appointment with your faculty advisor upon receipt of these materials. A schedule will be posted on his or her office door. Preregistration for spring classes is from November 12-15 in the Admissions and Records Office. Spring tuition and fees are not due at that time.

Benefit for Married Students

Spouses of full-time seminarians are invited to audit one class per semester without cost. Complete the Student Spouse Registration for Unofficial Audit form and return it to the Admissions and Records Office before the spring semester begins. Important Deadline for Spring Loans

November 4 is the priority deadline to apply for a Stafford Loan for spring 2003. This deadline will facilitate your loan being available when spring classes begin in January.

The final cutoff date is December 2. The Financial Aid Office must receive the following documents (available online) before the deadline:

• FAFSA form completed and processed by the Central Processor on or before 11/04/02. (www.fafsa.ed.gov)
• Financial Aid Application and certification statement
• Student Loan Data Sheet
• Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (Only one promissory note is required while attending AGTS)

Nomad Training—If you would like to learn several different methods of media for class presentations, please come to a 20-minute Nomad training session on one of the following days in room 225:

Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving will soon be here, and many of us will be spending the holiday with family or friends. We, the faculty and staff at AGTS, want everyone to have a place to go for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you know of someone who needs a place to go, please open your home and make this a special season of giving to the people in our community. If you do not have a place to go for Thanksgiving, please contact the Student Services office at 268-1081; and we will help you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Theological Roundtable

Sam Cartwright will be reading "A Study of Paul's Usage of Sarx with Special Reference to Romans 7:13-25 and Galatians 5:17." This meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12, beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Room 228. Check out the papers in the student computer lab under Public Documents.

Annual Chili Cook-Off

Is your secret family recipe one of the best? Are you creative? Do you like your chili spicy? Bring your crock pot of Chili to share on Thursday, November 21 in the Student Lounge for the Annual Chili Cook-off. Let the contest begin and let the judges decide on the 2002 Chili winners.

You could win prizes ranging from cooking appliances to gift certificates. Participants will have a number of categories in which to compete. So, get out those aprons, sign up at the table outside the chapel doors, and come on down to the annual chili cook-off!

Singles’ Potluck

You are invited to come for a time of fun and fellowship at the singles' potluck on Friday, November 8 from 7-9:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Please bring your favorite dish to share. Don't miss it!

Parents’ Night Out

Student Ministries

Victory Mission—A ministry team will lead services and serve supper at the Victory Mission homeless shelter on Thursday, November 21, from 6-8 p.m. We will meet in the chapel at 5:45 p.m. for prayer. For more information, please call Sheryl Shearer (866-3424).

Prison Ministry—Students will have the opportunity to conduct a Pentecostal service at the Federal Medical Center for Prisoners in December. For more information, please contact Heather-Gail Belfon (833-5843).

Chapel Worship Teams—If you would like to be involved in a chapel worship team, bring your instruments and voices to the Monday rehearsals at 4:30 p.m. Rehearsals will cover all music for Tuesday-Thursday chapel services. For more information, please contact Jim Risner (890-1866).

Nursing Home Ministry—Students can help revive hope and plant an understanding of life purposes in the elderly on Sunday, November 3 and 17, from 2:15-3:30 p.m. For more information, please call Patrice Robichaux (868-0142).
